Our Story
It began in October of 2020 with the oddly shaped hallway in our home. I decided I would build a six foot long hallway table to fill the space and allow us to decorate throughout the year. My original design came from Rogue Engineer and I found that I enjoyed the build. After posting pictures online I received a few requests for the same table so to fill the demand, I sold ours and began building more, with a slightly modified design that retained the general aesthetics. Long story short, with the completion of the Mission-Inspired Walnut Console Table the spot in our hallway finally has a permanent resident.
As I tried to get away from rustic/farmhouse style furniture I moved into cutting boards, serving trays, and charcuterie boards, ultimately participating in two craft shows in late 2021. While I still maintain a small stock of these items for friends and family looking for last minute gifts, personalized with the laser engraver, I have moved away from smaller crafts into my true passion: fine furniture.
These days I take inspiration from American period furniture as well as some modern pieces. I continue to do some client builds but with the growth of my Instagram page and the slow and steady growth on Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube, I focus just as much on content creation. With my content I hope to inspire others to take up the hobby, or if they already work with wood, to expand their skill set, try more difficult pieces or techniques, and design their own pieces and make something wonderful.
Our name was chosen with the idea of evoking a picture of rolling green pastures, surrounded by old growth hardwood forests where we patiently wait for those majestic trees to be naturally overcome by a storm allowing us to peacefully and sustainably harvest the lumber. Using that lumber the mind paints a picture of that wood being skillfully crafted into custom furniture that allows the tree to live on for decades or centuries to come, improving countless lives and providing a use to the owners of the furniture. The truth is, it is the subdevelopment where our business first started and the name had a pleasant ring to it.
Fernwood Farms Woodworking is now a family run business. My wife does all of our graphic design, website design, and marketing. Our daughter enjoys coming out to the shop and either playing with scraps or helping me clean up from time to time. I look forward to our youngest daughter also wanting to spend some time in the shop but only if she is interested.
